AI is moving rapidly from experimentation to a potentially transformative force for health and care. But the biggest opportunity may not be technology itself. It is what technology enables people and organisations to do differently.
For the NHS, AI has the potential to support better decisions, reduce administrative burden, create capacity for frontline teams and help move care towards earlier intervention and prevention. Yet technology alone will not deliver transformation. The challenge is making sure AI is introduced in ways that work for clinicians, staff and patients — building trust, capability and measurable outcomes along the way.
The NHS 10-year plan sets out three fundamental shifts: from hospital to community, from analogue to digital, and from sickness to prevention. AI can help accelerate each of these shifts, from smarter diagnostics and remote monitoring to more personalised patient services and greater use of data.
But there is a critical question behind all of this: how do we make AI work with people, rather than simply for them?
A people-focused approach means involving clinicians early in service design, preparing the workforce for new ways of working, and putting strong governance and responsible AI principles in place. It means being clear about where technology can augment human expertise — and where human judgement must remain at the heart of care. The prize is significant: a more sustainable health service, more time for people to focus on care, and better outcomes for patients.
