Welcome back to our official spotlight series where we sit down and talk about all things tech with the brightest minds in Leeds.
This week, we’re spotlighting George Fairhall, Founder and CEO of Works and Communications (WAC). WAC is an app that helps hourly-paid workers keep track of hours, earnings, rotas, bills – anything that’s around hourly paid work, WAC helps them to stay organised and gives users financial security.
George hadn’t planned to be in the tech industry, and she was being told a thousand times that there was no way she could do it, but she did! As a female founder since 2019, she’s still learning on the job – as are most founders.
Before WAC, George was experiencing underpaid wages and overworked hours. After realising there was no support and no one to turn to, she did something about it. By taking it day by day, building a network, getting lots of advice, and not running before being able to walk, WAC have raised £1 million to date and are working on raising another £1 million for their next growth stage from start-up to scale-up, introducing a premium plan that will enter WAC into the revenue-generating category of business.
3 main takeaways you can get from this interview are:
“I’ve seen far worse than what I experienced, and it’s shocking. You’ll be able to see form our reviews how life-changing our app has been to people, which is crazy when you think about it. So, yeah, they [my customers] influence me every day to fight for a good cause, and to make a difference.”
