The Coder's Guild unpack the importance of training, and dig into their new Skills Connect course.

The Coders Guild have been working on a new approach to leadership training. Taking influence and guidance from leaders of highly effective teams, they have developed a course centred on practical outcomes and a super-fast ROI. Read on to find out how you can gain free access to employer-endorsed training with a WYCA Skills Connect course, brought to you by the Mayor of West Yorkshire and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

“Big shout out to the seasoned leaders and managers who have made this course what it is. A new way to think about leadership with a focus on the wellbeing and connections of truly effective teams. Two years in the making, I’m absolutely thrilled to be able to offer this as a government funded course for people in West Yorkshire.”

The path to becoming an accidental manager is a common one, with many senior leaders having accrued managerial skills on the job. Though jumping in the deep end can be a great way to gain hands-on managerial experience, learning to hone these skills through additional training can help to bring rapid benefits to the entire organisation.

Based on insight and feedback from experienced team leaders we work with closely, The Coder’s Guild has designed a crash-course covering the essential skills needed to become a better leader.

Covering everything from time and resource management to KPI’s and measuring success, the course takes learnings from the digital and technical world, and applies them to both technical and non-technical teams. A great fit for anyone looking to get the most from their team, the course runs over 12 weeks in short, manageable blocks so as not to detract from work.

Here’s what cohort member and Digital Director at Madeby.studio, Matt Wheeler, had to say:

“Having spoken to Leeds City Council about leadership courses the only course they could recommend was the Help to Grow programme. Although, this does not fit our requirements as it only touched on key areas that we required educating on. I mentioned to LCC if there is any opportunity that they would consider bringing in a course specifically for helping companies manage their teams effectively through culture, effective management and leadership – They said no. When Crispin got in touch in regards to the Leading Digital Teams and Project Management courses, these were exactly what we needed at the time to help us scale. They’re very focused on the specific topic area we needed as well as the trainer being in the employment area as a senior manager providing education through lived experience.

As we started a business straight out of university, we had very little education in the actual running of a business. We could produce effective design and development solutions although as we hired more team members, it started getting tricky of what is the most effective way to help people reach their potential.
This is where The Coders Guild course came in perfectly, as the training that is provided comes from real world experiences with everything related to my day-to-day activities as a leader. Since being part of the course we have already put many of the theories into action within the company which has helped us progress as a company and helped our team reach their potential. It’s provided us more confidence that we’re doing the right things and enabled us to identify bottlenecks in our management styles which can be worked on.

Since being part of the course, we have been using all our learnings and implementing them in preparation to scale. Without the course we wouldn’t have felt as comfortable/confident scaling the business effectively. Now we have the general knowledge of effective management/leadership tools that enabled us to better prepare for the next stage of the business. Our goal is to grow our team to a company of 15 people as the courses we were enrolled on are essential to help us do this.”

Applications for the next cohort, starting Monday 19th June are now open and we have further cohorts starting throughout the year. Find out more about the course, funding options and how you can benefit from getting stuck in here.
